In Review: February

February

I know a lot of people don't tend to not like the month of February, but I am a bit partial to this short and sweet month. Although school was crazy hectic {what else is new}, I celebrated my 29th birthday with a great group of friends. When I'm wasn't at work or school, I've been obsessed with The West Wing. I think I'm about 10 years late to the party, but I'm loving myself some Josh Lyman.

Highlights:
- Birthday celebration with some of my best friends at Nada and Igby's.
- Finally finishing my capstone and my team winning the $5,000 grand prize!
- A few pleasantly warm and sunny days which were great for a walk around my neighborhood,

Favorite Outfits:
February Favorites
- Clearly, I'm still loving patterned pants!
- You can check out the original posts here and here

Looking Forward To:
- Spring Break! Not quite the same as college  but a week off from classes is reason celebrate.
- Annual trip to Chicago for St. Patrick's Day.
- Start working on my list of 30 things to do before I turn 30.

It took me a while to find a tweed blazer I loved but Zara gem has been worth every penny seeing as it's been my go-to blazer all fall/winter. It's perfect to throw over a knit tee, plus it works great with a patterned top like today. It reminds me of all an old professor's jacket or something similar. Which given the amount of time I've spent at school lately is kind of perfect.

On my birthday last week, I decided to sport one of my favorites -- animal print.

With work and school being at an all time level of crazy the last few weeks I went my standard {and most comfortable} uniform to get my through the 12+ hour day. But on the bright side ice cream cake and presents were involved which made the long day that much better. Now that my capstone is successfully behind me {more on that later} I'm excited to relax this weekend and make a belated shopping trip to mall. This girl has got to use her birthday coupons!

I knew I wanted to wear this top when I got dressed. Unfortunately, that's all I knew. First I tried a full skirt, then a pencil skirt, perhaps a different pencil skirt. Does the outfit need a cardigan? No was the answer to all of these questions. Not giving up on this shirt, I went my go-to route of ankle pants. When in doubt, the answer is always ankle pants.

A Single Girl's Valentine's Day Outfit

I've never been one to dress super literal for holidays. Most of that is a lack of planning on my part, but some of that is just my personality. But today for Valentine's I thought I'd put together an outfit that it fits my own version of Valentine's. I started with a bit of pink because, obviously that's the color of the day. From there I added a loose boyfriend blazer {who needs an actual bf when you've got this kind of blazer?}, a fur stole for a little bit of romanticism, and then I capped it off with a vintage broach. In the end my outfit probably doesn't scream Valentine's Day but that's what I like about it. It's all in the details.

After a morning of trying on outfits and then quickly discarding them into a messy pile on my closet floor, I did what any 20 something girl would do -- I turned to pinterest. Not only did I come up with an outfit, but I also saved myself from running late {which is unfortunately happening more and more lately} to work. I didn't copy the pin exactly, but I had enough of the elements to create something similar. Definitely a win considering the amount of outfits that were now in piles on my floor. So thanks pinterest for getting me to work on time and for keeping my mess to a slightly more manageable level.

And Counting...

5yr

Remember the days when it was standard procedure to bring in sweets on your birthday?
Where did those days go?

Also if I could figure out the where the years 24-28 have gone that would be great too.
But there will be sweets at some point today -- I wonder if my professor would mind if I squeeze that in after my presentation but before my midterm.
 No harm in asking right?

Pattern Mixing at Work

My sister made the comment the other day that my closet has been taken over by patterns!
She's right.

I've always been a fan of stripes and florals, but when I started in the "corporate world" I leaned towards wearing solids  {because that's what professionals wore, right?} and saved most of my beloved prints for the weekend. Sure I wore striped tops or floral prints to work every now and then, but the thought of wearing them together? No way! Somewhere between starting this blog and becoming more comfortable in my ability to make work wear work for me, I slowly started mixing patterns together. A leopard shoe here, a floral skirt there, and now I'm an owner of an overflowing closet full of patterns.

Since more often than not, I'm sporting at least one pattern I thought today I'd share a few work appropriate pieces for the other liked minded pattern obsessed corporate gal out there.

Floral Top // Floral Skirt // Polka Dot Top // Polka Dot Pants

For those of you thinking "Liz, pattern mixing is so last year!" You're totally right. But if you're a girl like me working in corporate America and you're looking for a small way to change up your outfits pattern mixing is a great tool!

Windy

With school in a bit of lull last week, I was bound and determined to get a good outfit post in {particularly since I had this cute shirt just begging to be worn}. But then it turns out the weather is clearly in cohoots with school in terms of sidelining this little thing I call blog. Basically it was a pretty windy morning and my hair is all kinds of the disheveled in these photos, but the outfit is still cute, right?

So long January!

1.30.13

Well January, weren't you just a hell of a month!

School // If someone was a winner this month it was {unfortunately} school. It completely dominated my life. With my capstone project not due for another 3 weeks, it looks like February is going to be more of the same.

Life // Despite lots of hours logged at the office and school, January did have a few fun moments here and there, but winning $200 at the casino {best baby shower idea EVER} had take the cake!

Style // January wasn't my most fashionable month {as witnessed by the lack of outfit posts}. In fact an embarrassing amount of time was spent in leggings and sweatshirts. And if it wasn't that, then it was whatever outfit was the easiest/quickest to throw on. Although there were a few honorable mentions.

Coming Up // I still have a good bit of school to look forward to in February, but more importantly I'm giving myself a weekend {or at least a Saturday off} to celebrate my 29th birthday!
